Last time we talked about how the biggest acts in rock are reducing their carbon footprint on their summer tours, and eco friendly rockers Radiohead are trying to get their fans in on the green act. After hiring Best Foot Forward to calculate the impact of their last two world tours, the environmental impact analysts found that most of the carbon emitted from the tours was generated by fans getting to and from the shows. The green thinking band decided to try and do something about it... and to get their fans to do something about it as well. When choosing venues for their In Rainbows tour this summer, they made sure to play in cities that have solid public transportation infrastructures in place, then encouraged their fans to take buses, trains, and other public transpo to the shows. Knowing not everyone would be able to take public transportation, Radiohead also encouraged their fans to carpool to the shows, especially at the venues not in city centers. The band has even started a discussion forum on their “Waste Central” Discussion board for fans to post tips on “innovative methods of travel” so that “further research can be done on carbon emissions and methods to reduce them.” The band even has a CO2 emissions calculator available for fans to figure out their own carbon impact on Radiohead.Com.
